    • Day 1

      Windhoek, Namibia

      Land in Namibia's capital and take it slow. Windhoek sits at 1,700m, so you'll want time to adjust to the elevation. The city is easy to walk around. Check out Independence Avenue for craft shopping and see the German colonial buildings.

      Sossusvlei & Sesriem

      Head out early through the Namib Desert to see the world's highest sand dunes. Climb Dune 45 before sunrise. It's a tough 170m climb but the dawn views make it worthwhile. Walk the 5km to Deadvlei before 10 AM to beat the intense desert heat. A recent visitor shared: "The contrast between the white clay pan, orange dunes and dead trees is surreal - bring extra camera batteries, you'll need them."

      Swakopmund

      Drive 5 hours to this German colonial town, stopping at Walvis Bay to see the flamingo lagoon. The coastal weather is cooler here. With German buildings and palm trees lining the streets, it feels like a slice of Europe. Book afternoon activities like skydiving or sandboarding when the morning fog lifts.

      Damaraland

      The 7-hour drive to Damaraland shows off stark mountains and plains. Look for desert elephants near dry riverbeds. The lodges sit high up with great sunset views. Pack warm clothes though. Desert nights get cold.

      Etosha National Park

      Okavango River

      Take a long but beautiful drive to the Caprivi Strip. The green riverside is totally different from the desert you've seen. Book evening boat trips ahead if visiting July through October. You'll see lots of birds and hippos.

      Okavango Delta

      Boat into Botswana's delta. Take mokoro (dugout canoe) trips for up-close wildlife viewing. You'll quietly pass elephants, antelope and birds. Walking safaris on islands depend on water levels, highest from June to August. Bring quick-dry clothes and bug spray.

      Chobe National Park

      This park is famous for its huge elephant herds in dry season. Mix morning drives with evening boat trips. The river cruises are perfect for photos of animals drinking and sunset scenes.

      Victoria Falls

    • Day 1

      Windhoek, Namibia

      Your adventure begins in Namibia's capital. Take a relaxing afternoon walk on Independence Avenue to explore the city. Book your airport transfer ahead of time since airport taxis aren't reliable. Stay in Klein Windhoek where you'll find plenty of restaurants and shops nearby.

    • Days 2-3

      Namib Desert & Sossusvlei

      Drive south to the oldest desert in the world (5-6 hours). Get to the Sossusvlei dunes at sunrise to avoid crowds and intense heat. The walk to Deadvlei is 5km and needs good fitness and lots of water. Bring closed shoes since the sand gets extremely hot after 9am. You can cool off with an afternoon walk in the shaded Sesriem Canyon.

      Swakopmund

      Take a 4-5 hour drive northwest to this charming German colonial town. Take a break at Walvis Bay to watch thousands of flamingos. If you want to try sandboarding or take a scenic flight book at least one day ahead during busy season. Plan outdoor activities for the afternoon when the morning fog lifts around 10am.

      Spitzkoppe Mountains

      Camp surrounded by stunning granite peaks. Bring good hiking shoes for afternoon walks since granite can get slippery. One traveler wrote: "The rocks turn blazing orange at dusk. Bring a headlamp for getting around camp after dark."

      Etosha National Park

      Spend two full days watching wildlife in Namibia's best park. Look for predators during morning drives. You'll often see elephants in the eastern part near Namutoni. Visit the enormous Etosha salt pan in late afternoon when mirages create amazing photo opportunities. Keep your food secure or the jackals will steal it.

      Okavango River

      Long 7-8 hour drive to Rundu. The peaceful riverside camping offers a nice change from desert views. Watch hippos and crocodiles from a safe distance. Bring warm clothes since nights get quite cold.

      Okavango Delta

      Enter Botswana for mokoro (dugout canoe) trips in the delta. Wear closed shoes that can handle getting wet for game walks. Go out early for the best wildlife viewing and bird photos. Pay attention to safety talks since you're in hippo and elephant territory.

      Chobe National Park

      Victoria Falls

      Cross into Zimbabwe to see the falls. Book helicopter rides for the morning when the light is best for photos and spots fill up fast. Bring raincoats for the walking trails since they get very wet from spray between March and July.

      Kruger National Park

      Take an early shuttle from Johannesburg to Kruger. The drive takes about 5 hours. Plan your afternoon game drives when wildlife is most active. Get up at 5:30 AM for the best wildlife viewing. Animals are most active at dawn and the early start will be worth it. Bring layers since mornings are cool but afternoons get hot. You'll find the best Big 5 sightings in the southern section of the park.

      Travel to Johannesburg

      Head back to Johannesburg for your Zimbabwe connection. Book afternoon flights from Kruger so you can fit in one last morning game drive. The drive takes about 5 hours so leave no later than 10 AM.

      Hwange National Park

      After flying to Livingstone go to Zimbabwe's top wildlife sanctuary. You'll see large elephant herds and painted dogs here. Stop at the Painted Dog Conservation Centre for some unique insights. The best time to spot animals is during dry season (May-October) near the waterholes.

      Victoria Falls

      It's just an hour from Hwange. Go early in the morning before crowds arrive. The morning light is perfect for photos. You'll need a waterproof camera cover since the spray can soak you especially during high water season (March-May). The helicopter flight gives you amazing views from above.

      Chobe National Park

      Cross to Botswana to see incredible numbers of elephants. Take an afternoon boat cruise on the Chobe River for excellent wildlife viewing.       Okavango Delta

      Fly from Kasane to Maun then transfer to the Delta. Take traditional mokoro rides through the waterways. June to August offers the best mix of high water and dry weather. Walking safaris need good fitness levels.

      Cape Town

      Switch gears in South Africa's most scenic city. Take the Table Mountain cable car first thing since afternoon clouds often cover the top.
