7 Day Austria Itinerary, incl. Vienna and Salzburg
Austria's cultural treasures span four cities: Vienna's imperial palaces, Salzburg's historic center, UNESCO-listed Hallstatt, and Innsbruck's crystal worlds. Includes 3-star accommodations at Hotel Caroline and Hotel Hohenstauffen, with breakfasts and train connections.
- Day 1
Vienna
Start your Austrian journey in Vienna with airport pickup included. The transfer from Vienna International Airport to central Vienna typically takes 20-30 minutes but can stretch to an hour during rush hours (8-10 AM and 4-6 PM). Your first evening is perfect for exploring the Innere Stadt (First District) where historic sites are all within walking distance. A recent visitor shared: "The evening atmosphere around Stephansplatz is magical - grab dinner at one of the traditional wine taverns (Heurigen) to shake off the jet lag."
- Day 2
Vienna Exploration
Use your 48-hour city pass to see Vienna's main attractions. Get to Schönbrunn Palace early at 8:30 AM before the crowds arrive. You'll need 3-4 hours to see the palace and its gardens properly. Spend your afternoon at the Hofburg Palace complex and Albertinaplatz. Take tram D or 38A up to Kahlenberg later in the day for great city views. You'll walk about 10km today so comfortable shoes are essential.
- Day 3
Vienna to Salzburg
Take a direct train to Salzburg which takes about 2.5 hours. Trains leave every hour from Wien Hauptbahnhof. Pick a mid-morning departure to avoid the commuter rush. Once you arrive take a self-guided walking tour through Salzburg's UNESCO-listed Old Town. You'll pass Mozart's birthplace and the Hohensalzburg fortress. Money-saving tip: Get a combined ticket for the fortress funicular and entry to save about €5.
- Day 4
Hallstatt Day Trip
Start early for your trip to the "Pearl of Austria." The train ride from Salzburg to Hallstatt includes one change at Attnang-Puchheim taking about 2.5 hours total. Important: Watch for the ferry from Hallstatt station to the village which meets every train. A visitor noted: "The morning mist over Lake Hallstatt creates incredible photo opportunities - worth setting an alarm for sunrise." Head back to Salzburg in the evening.
- Day 5
Salzburg to Innsbruck
Take a morning train to Innsbruck. The 2-hour journey goes through beautiful Alpine scenery. Sit on the right side for the best mountain views. After you check in walk around Innsbruck's historic center and see the famous Golden Roof. Look for dinner near Maria-Theresien-Strasse where traditional Tyrolean restaurants offer views of the mountains.
- Day 6
Swarovski Crystal Worlds
Visit Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens. Take bus route 4 from Innsbruck for a 25-minute ride. Get there at opening time (8:30 AM) to see the Crystal Cloud in morning light. The gardens are stunning with over 800,000 hand-mounted crystals. Check out the play tower too. It's meant for kids but adults will enjoy it just as much.
- Day 7
Departure from Innsbruck
7 Day Austrian Alps Itinerary, incl. Zillertal and Mayrhofen
The Zillertal Alps challenge awaits over 7 days, connecting 6 historic mountain huts across 60km. From Friesenberghaus, daily treks up to 15km accumulate 6,000m total elevation gain. Routes include the Schwarzsteinmoor and wire-secured Eisenklamm gorge.
- Day 1
Gasthaus Breitlahner to Friesenberghaus
- Day 2
Friesenberghaus to Furtschaglhaus
Your 14km route takes you across Friesenbergscharte and down to Schlegeis reservoir. The path to Olpererhütte shows off some amazing glacier views. Be careful on the steep hairpin bends. After the reservoir crossing comes another climb to Furtschaglhaus. This final stretch can get tricky in wet weather.
- Day 3
Furtschaglhaus to Berliner Hütte
Today you'll cross Schönbichler Scharte (3,060m), the highest point of your trek. Pay attention on the wire-rope sections while carrying your pack. Your reward is the magnificent Berliner Hütte. A recent hiker shared: "The five-meter-high dining room with crystal chandeliers feels more like a mountain palace than a hiking hut. Don't miss the sunset from the western terrace."
- Day 4
Berliner Hütte to Greizer Hütte
The trail leads through Schwarzsteinmoor to Schwarzsee lake at 2,472m. The route to Mörchenscharte (2,872m) includes some exposed sections with rope protection. Use the clips when available and keep three points of contact. If it's rainy, consider the longer but easier alternate route down to Floitengrund.
- Day 5
Greizer Hütte to Kasseler Hütte
- Day 6
Kasseler Hütte to Karl-von-Edel-Hütte
The Aschaffenburg High Trail provides an 8-hour journey. Leave by 8 AM to reach the hut before dark. This is your most demanding day due to exposure and distance. Keep some snacks handy for the final stretch.
- Day 7
Descent to Mayrhofen
You can either hike down 1,650m over 9km to Mayrhofen or take the Ahornbahn cable car. Check the cable car schedule the night before. If hiking, the many switchbacks are tough on the knees. Hiking poles will help. End your Alpine adventure with some traditional Tyrolean food in Mayrhofen.
7 Days in Salzkammergut, incl. Bad Goisern and Hallstatt
Cyclists pedal 25-55km daily through Austria's stunning terrain. The route takes in Hallstatt's UNESCO heritage, Bad Ischl's Imperial Villa, and three lakes around Bad Aussee. Guests unwind at Bad Goisern's 4-star Goiserer Mühle, enjoying breakfast and spa amenities.
- Day 1
Arrival in Bad Goisern
- Day 2
Gmunden and Lake Traunsee (45 km)
Take a scenic train ride to Gmunden. Start at Orth Castle before the crowds arrive at 10 AM. The bike path follows the Traun River to Ebensee and continues to Bad Ischl. Visit the Imperial Villa gardens in the late afternoon when it's quieter. Bring a light windbreaker since lake breezes can be cool even on sunny days.
- Day 3
Lake Gosau Loop (25-40 km)
- Day 4
Lake Wolfgang Circuit (55 km)
- Day 5
Hallstatt Exploration (35 km)
- Day 6
Lakes Tour (35-55 km)
Start with a train ride to Bad Aussee for your lakes circuit. The route to Lake Grundlsee is mostly flat with good tree cover. When you reach Bad Ischl, stop at Café Zauner for their special Zaunerstollen pastry. It was Emperor Franz Josef's favorite for good reason. Enjoy an easy downhill ride back to Bad Goisern through the valley.
