14 Day Southeast Asia Itinerary, incl. Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City
Pedal through Cambodia's temple-studded landscapes to Vietnam's lush Mekong Delta on this 14-day cycling tour. Stops include Phnom Penh's Genocide Museum, rural villages, and a traditional homestay, revealing two distinct cultures.
- Days 1-2
Bangkok & Ancient Ayutthaya, Thailand
Begin your journey in Bangkok before moving to historic Ayutthaya for your first bike ride. "The Thai team set an extremely high standard of support from the outset which meant that despite jetlag and high humidity, the cycling was really pleasurable." Try to book afternoon flights into Bangkok to avoid morning traffic.
- Days 3-4
Eastern Thailand to Cambodia Border
Pedal through rubber plantations and rice fields on your way to Aranyaprathet. The route is mostly flat but the heat can be challenging. Remember to bring electrolyte tablets and drink water often. A guest mentioned: "There are regular breaks and the support teams always ready with food and drinks waiting for us."
- Days 5-7
Siem Reap & Angkor Temples, Cambodia
Spend three days exploring the magnificent temple complexes. One cyclist shared: "Cycling around Angkor Wat has to be the very best way to see them. The site is huge so you don't want to be on a bus in that heat and humidity!" Plan to visit temples by 8:30 AM before the crowds arrive. The 43.5-mile ride to Banteay Srei is optional but worth the effort.
- Days 8-9
Phnom Penh
- Days 10-11
Mekong Delta, Vietnam
- Days 12-14
Ho Chi Minh City
Complete your journey cycling to HCMC with local market stops along the way. One cyclist advised: "Crossing the road in Vietnam requires going slow and steady - don't run or stop and everyone will move around you." You might want to stay longer to see the Cu Chi Tunnels. Most travelers suggest booking a hotel in District 1 for convenient access to food and attractions.
14 Day Indochina Itinerary, incl. Ho Chi Minh City and Angkor Wat
A 14-day cultural voyage through Vietnam and Cambodia takes you from Ho Chi Minh City's Cu Chi tunnels to Siem Reap's Angkor temples. Local life unfolds through Mekong Delta homestays and Kampot's pepper farms, while Phnom Penh's Royal Palace adds royal grandeur. Comfortable stays at Huong Sen Hotel enhance the journey.
- Days 1-2
Ho Chi Minh City
Begin your journey in Vietnam's vibrant southern city. Visit the Cu Chi tunnels first thing on day 2 to avoid crowds and peak heat. "The Cu Chi tunnels were fascinating, showing incredible ingenuity during wartime." Skip the tunnel crawl if you're claustrophobic. Take an afternoon city tour including the War Remnants Museum but be prepared for graphic exhibits.
- Days 3-4
Mekong Delta
Take a 3-hour trip to Cai Be with stops at local cottage industries. Spend the night at a homestay but pack strong DEET insect repellent for the mosquitos. "The Mekong Delta homestay was a treat. Take a look at the multilevel farming done there." The next day includes sampan boat rides through canals to Vinh Long before heading to Chau Doc.
- Days 5-6
Kampot, Cambodia
- Days 7-8
Phnom Penh
- Days 9-11
Siem Reap & Angkor
- Days 12-14
Bangkok
Start early for the Thai border crossing (3+ hours). Spend your final days exploring Bangkok by long-tail boat through the canals and visiting the Grand Palace complex. Remember to wear clothes covering shoulders and knees at temples. "Bangkok feels chaotic after sleepy Cambodia - plan temple visits for early morning before the heat and crowds build."
14 Day Indochina Itinerary, incl. Ho Chi Minh City and Luang Prabang
From Halong Bay's emerald waters to Angkor Wat's stone temples, this dual-country adventure reveals Vietnam and Cambodia's treasures. Float through village waterways, wander ancient temples, and browse bustling markets. Includes 13 nights in comfortable hotels plus an overnight cruise.
- Days 1-3
Southern Vietnam:
Begin in Ho Chi Minh City with a visit to the War Remnants Museum. It's a powerful experience that documents the Vietnam War, but be prepared for some emotional content. Take a day trip to explore the Cu Chi Tunnels and learn about their clever design. Don't forget insect repellent. You can also visit the Mekong Delta, but know that transfers take about 2.5 hours each way because of traffic. Skip the My Tho/Ben Tre tour unless you really want to experience delta life.
- Days 4-8
Northern Vietnam:
Book an afternoon flight to Hanoi to avoid morning traffic. Take time to walk through the Old Quarter and visit the Temple of Literature. A day trip to Hoa Lu and Tam Coc offers great cycling through rice paddies. The real highlight is the overnight Ha Long Bay cruise. The limestone karsts look amazing even on cloudy days. Visit Sung Sot Cave first thing to avoid the crowds.
- Days 9-11
Cambodia:
Take a morning flight to Siem Reap. You'll want two full days to explore the incredible Angkor temples. Start with Ta Prohm and Bayon before visiting Angkor Wat when the lighting is best. A previous visitor shared: "Our guide Serey took fun group photos which really helped bond the group." Skip the Tonle Sap Lake floating village tour. Instead, visit the Khmer Rouge museums to learn about this important period in history.
- Days 12-14
Laos:
Finish your trip in Luang Prabang. Get up before 6 AM to see the daily alms-giving ceremony with hundreds of monks. The Kuang Si Falls are beautiful. One traveler suggests: "I arrived at opening and got uninterrupted photos before crowds arrived." Remember to bring USD for visas ($30-50) since they don't usually accept AUD. Only drink bottled water, even for brushing teeth.
What people love about 2 week Cambodia and Vietnam tours
- Cycle Indochina & Angkor
The trip was better than expected. Amazing group, professional and excellent guide and 3 of the most beautiful countries.
- Thai Indochina Explorer
The Mekong Delta homestay was a treat. Take a look at the multilevel farming done there. The guides were all fantastic, well versed, and helped me out when I got sick. I spent a couple of extra days in Bangkok which was worth it. :) Cambodian Temples are superb.
- Best of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos 14 Days 13 nights
I went on the Best of Vietnam - Cambodia - Laos 14 Days 13 nights tour. Ha Long Bay was beautiful although it was overcast when I was there so the real beauty didn't shine through. I went in December to somewhat avoid the humidity so it was cool on the upper deck of the boat. You will need a hoodie or something with long sleeves. To me the Hanoi City Tour was not worth the time or money. I loved learning about the history of Laos although it was really quite sad. I would have preferred to be in a group but I was fortunate enough in a way that I ended up on a private tour because no one else had booked the tour in Laos when I went and so I was able to tailor the tour to suit me. I was able to get to Kuangsi Waterfall early and take uninterrupted photos and avoid the crowds. Remember to exchange AUD to USD before you arrive in Laos as they do not exchange AUD to USD whilst in Laos. So I wasn't able to help the local community and buy their products. It is not worth exchanging to Laos Kip because it's apparently not worth anything when you leave. I had to use my credit card for my meals; it worked out to be cheap. There is a Joma Bakery on the corner, 2 mins walk from the hotel- My Lao Home. Buffett breakfast was a few feet away from the hotel- as you step out of the hotel, go left and its on the right side of the street. Angkor Wat didn't disappoint. It's magnificent. We were fortunate enough to have a brilliant Tour Guide Serey Youk Kim. He engaged with us and took cheesey group photos of us which helped the group form a bond which the other Tour Guides weren't able to do. Unfortunately this tour does not include a visit to any of the Cambodian museums. In hindsight I would have liked to have visited a museum about the horrific history of the Khmer Rouge. The Cambodian hotel is a bit far from everything; I've given this feedback to Asia Focus. Whereas the other hotels in this tour package are well positioned with everything nearby. I would suggest you request Asia Focus to give Tonle Sap Lake half day tour a miss. It is not worth it at all. The Cu Chi Tunnels tour is worth it. Just remember to apply an insect repellent though! It was so interesting to learn about the ingenuity of everything about the tunnel concept. The bus ride back to the hotel was 2.5hrs due to peak hour traffic (FML!). Asia Focus should really organise a hotel between this and the Sai Gon - My Tho - Ben Tre tour rather than a hotel in the heart of the city as both tours are 2 hr bus rides (one way) and I would have preferred my time better spent. The Ho Chi Minh War Remnants Museum is a must see! I can't fathom how other countries could do this to a nation. I felt like crying looking at the photos and reading the devastating stories behind the exhibits at the museum. You could give the Sai Gon - My Tho - Ben Tre tour a miss. I made the most of it because I paid for it. Although it was an interesting "insight into daily life in the Mekong Delta". Tip: have enough USD for Visa's at Laos $USD30 for Australians and USD$50 in Cambodia for Australians. I got sick in the first 2 cities. To avoid getting sick in the next 2 cities I started brushing my teeth using the bottles of water provided in the hotels and I stopped eating anything raw as well. Which helped as I didn't get sick after that.
