  • Day 1

    Berlin to Hannover

    Leave Berlin in the morning and drive west to Wolfsburg (2.5 hours). Visit the Autostadt, Volkswagen's automotive theme park. Get there before 10 AM to beat the tour buses. After lunch, visit Celle to see its 500+ half-timbered houses. You can walk through the historic old town in about 1.5 hours. Spend the night in Hannover, where you'll see an interesting mix of modern and traditional architecture in the rebuilt city center.

    Hannover to Eisenach

    Start your day in Goslar's medieval old town, a UNESCO site. The Rammelsberg Mine museum opens at 9 AM. Book the first English tour to make the most of your day. Drive to Göttingen for lunch and try the traditional restaurants near Market Square. Visit Bad Sooden's spa architecture in the afternoon before reaching Eisenach.     Eisenach to Leipzig

    Nuremberg to Munich

    Take the scenic drive to Kelheim for a Danube river cruise (April-October, weather dependent). Visit the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial early to find parking.     Munich to Frankfurt

  • Days 1-2

    Berlin

    Spend your first two days discovering Berlin. Get to Museum Island early to avoid the crowds. Visit the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag building, but make sure to book your free Reichstag dome visit online at least three days before. Set aside about 2 hours each for the Holocaust Memorial and Berlin Wall Memorial Museum. In the evening, check out the trendy Kantstrasse area, which has great Asian food and lively bars.

    Berlin to Hannover via Wolfsburg and Celle

    Start your day early and drive to Wolfsburg to visit the Autostadt. You'll need 2-3 hours to see the pavilions properly. Next, stop at medieval Celle to see its famous half-timbered houses. The late afternoon light makes them look particularly beautiful. Stay in Hannover's Mitte district, where you'll find plenty of restaurants and good transport connections.

    Goslar and Eisenach

    Head to Goslar, a UNESCO site, and get to the Rammelsberg Mine Museum for the first tour at 9:30 AM. The streets are made of cobblestones, so wear good shoes.     Eisenach to Leipzig
