8 Day Moldova Itinerary, incl. Chisinau and Transnistria
A comprehensive eight-day tour through Moldova features 7 nights' accommodation split between city hotels and village guesthouses. The package includes 6 lunches, 6 dinners, and daily guided activities averaging 3-4 hours.
- Days 1-2
Chisinau & Cricova Wine Region
Start your trip in Chisinau, Moldova's capital. Visit the Stefan cel Mare monument and Lord Nativity Cathedral. Go to the cathedral early in the morning to beat the tour groups. On day two, take a 30-minute drive to the Cricova wine cellars. The underground tunnels stay at 12°C all year, so pack a warm jacket. You'll see impressive wine collections, including bottles from 1902.
- Days 3-4
Butuceni Village & Orhei Vechi
Stay in Butuceni village to explore the Orhei Vechi open-air complex. Visit the Orthodox Cave Monastery but wear good shoes with grip. The old stone steps can get slippery. Take a local cooking class to learn how to make placinte, the traditional stuffed pastries. Make a trip to Saharna (75km north) to see monasteries and waterfalls. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen since the walking trails offer little shade.
- Day 5
Transnistria Time Capsule
Take a day trip to Transnistria, where Soviet history stands still. Visit Tiraspol to see Lenin statues and Soviet architecture. Bring your passport. Border crossings can take time but day visits are common. Stop at local stolovaya cafes for Soviet-style food. Visit the KVINT cognac distillery, which has been making spirits since 1897.
- Days 6-7
Gagauzia & Wine Country
Visit Gagauzia to meet the Orthodox Christian Turkic people. Go to Comrat's central market in the morning for the freshest local produce. Visit Milestii Mici, home to the world's largest wine collection. Its 1.5 million bottles sit in underground tunnels that stretch 200km. You'll tour the tunnels by buggy.
- Day 8
Departure

- Day 1
Chisinau
Begin in the walkable capital city center. Visit the Central Market in the morning to see locals shopping for fresh produce. - Day 2
Cricova and Rural Villages
- Day 3
Wine Country
- Day 4
Northern Monasteries
- Day 5
Transnistria
Visit this self-proclaimed republic that feels frozen in Soviet times. Border crossing takes 30-45 minutes. Bring your passport and small bills for possible tourist fees. See the Soviet-style House of Soviets in Tiraspol and Tighina Fortress. Remember outside ATMs and credit cards don't work here so bring cash.
- Day 6
Gagauzia
- Day 7
Monasteries and Wine
- Day 8
Jewish Heritage
Learn about Chisinau's Jewish history in the old Jewish quarter and synagogues. Take an afternoon boat ride on the Dniester River. Book morning trips for calmer water and better photos.
- Day 9

Book afternoon flights to avoid morning traffic. The airport is small but arrive 2 hours early since check-in can be slow.
8 Day Moldova Itinerary, incl. Chisinau and Transnistria
This eight-day cultural tour weaves through Moldova's treasures, from Orheiul Vechi's ancient monasteries to Tiraspol's Soviet architecture. Seven nights in Chisinau and one in Soroca, with daily guided excursions and two traditional village lunches included.
- Day 1
Chisinau
Arrive in Moldova's capital around midday. The city center blends Soviet architecture with Orthodox churches and 19th-century Russian Empire buildings. Take an evening walk down the main boulevard to Stefan cel Mare Square to see the Orthodox Cathedral and Triumphal Arch. Book a hotel near the central boulevard. You'll be within a 20-minute walk of most restaurants and attractions.
- Day 2
Orheiul Vechi
Visit rural Moldova to explore the impressive Orheiul Vechi complex. A 2-3 hour hike takes you through local villages and ridge trails with views of the winding Raut River. Visit the old cave monastery built into limestone cliffs. You can also drive straight to the monastery if you prefer. The paths can get slippery after rain so wear good shoes.
- Day 3
Gagauzia Region
Travel south to the autonomous Gagauz region. Visit Comrat's central market early for the best produce. Stop by the ethnographic museum to learn about this unique Christian Turkic culture. Have lunch in a local village home. The trip takes about 2 hours each way from Chisinau. Bring small bills if you want to buy local crafts.
- Days 4-5
Northern Moldova & Soroca
Head north to see the Tipova cliff monastery and Saharna Monastery with its beautiful frescoes. Pass through Transnistria at Retina on your way to Soroca. Stay overnight to see the town's 16th-century fortress and unique Roma district with its interesting architecture. You'll go back to your Chisinau hotel the next day so pack light.
- Day 6
Transnistria
Cross into Transnistria with your passport. Visit Tiraspol's Soviet-style central square with its Lenin statue. Check out the busy central market and orthodox cathedral. Get some Transnistrian rubles for spending and souvenirs. They're only valid in Transnistria. Plan for 30-45 minutes at border control each way.
- Day 7
Milesti Mici Winery & Chisinau
Tour Milesti Mici's underground wine cellars in old limestone mines. The complex has 200km of tunnels storing millions of bottles. Spend your afternoon in Chisinau. The central market is great for local products like walnuts, dried fruits and wine.
- Day 8
Departure
For later flights, visit the central agricultural market early morning between 7-9am. Buy some Moldovan wine and local products to take home. Pack bottles carefully for travel. Most flights connect through bigger European airports.
