3 Day Morocco Itinerary, incl. Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert
The 3-day Moroccan route spans 1200km round-trip, visiting 8 destinations including UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou, 300m-high Todra Gorges, and Merzouga's Erg Chebbi dunes. Traditional riads and desert camps offer authentic Berber culture through music and cuisine.
- Day 1
Marrakech to Dades Gorges (350km)
Leave Marrakech early for your journey through the High Atlas Mountains. The road up Tizi n'Tichka pass climbs to 2,260m. If you get motion sickness bring pills for the winding mountain roads. "The views through the Atlas Mountains are breathtaking, though the roads can be challenging. Our guide made frequent stops for photos and fresh air which really helped." Visit Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO-listed mud-brick kasbah and filming location for Game of Thrones and Gladiator. Go in the morning to beat the tour buses. Your route continues to Ouarzazate's film studios and along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs before overnight at a riad in Dades Gorge.
- Day 2
Dades Gorges to Merzouga Desert (250km)
Start with breakfast then drive to Todra Gorge. The 300m-high canyon walls create incredible views. Take a walk through the gorge but wear sturdy shoes since paths can be slippery. Stop at a fossil workshop in Erfoud on your way to the Sahara. The day peaks with a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. One visitor shared: "Watching the sun set over the endless dunes while swaying on camelback was surreal. Bring a scarf - the desert winds can kick up sand." Your night includes dinner at a desert camp under starlit skies with traditional music.
- Day 3
Merzouga to Marrakech (600km)
Get up early for an optional sunrise camel ride. The golden morning light on the dunes makes the early wake-up worthwhile. After breakfast start the long drive back to Marrakech through the Draa Valley. The 9-hour journey includes stops at scenic spots and villages. You'll reach Marrakech around 7-8pm in summer or 8-9pm in winter. Plan evening flights for the next day to avoid rushing.
3 Day Morocco Itinerary, incl. Marrakech and Merzouga
Rich experiences fill three days visiting 10 destinations including UNESCO site Ait Benhaddou, Todra Gorges, and Erg Chebbi dunes. The tour features 2-hour camel trek, desert camping, and crossing Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2260m.
- Day 1
Marrakech to Todra Gorges
Leave Marrakech at 7:00 AM to avoid traffic. You'll drive over the Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260m. "We saw so much in such a short time, and our driver stopped at many interesting places along the way." Take motion sickness pills if needed - the mountain roads twist and turn quite a bit. Stop at Ait Benhaddou, Morocco's most iconic kasbah. Visit before noon for the best photos and to avoid the crowds. Your journey continues through the Valley of Roses until you reach Todra Gorges for the night. Your hotel will be close to the gorge, perfect for evening exploring when it's cooler.
- Day 2
Todra Gorges to Erg Chebbi Dunes
After breakfast, drive through desert towns to Merzouga, where the Sahara begins. Pack light for your camel trek - you only need basics for one night. The 2-hour camel ride can be uncomfortable, so wear good clothes and bring a scarf for sun and sand protection. One guest shared: "The desert trip is quite amazing and should be experienced by everybody, just be prepared for lots of driving." When you reach camp, climb the 150m dunes to watch the sunset. You can sleep in traditional Berber tents or under the stars. Bring warm clothes - desert nights get cold.
- Day 3
Erg Chebbi to Marrakech
3 Days in Morocco Desert, incl. Marrakech and Fes
A 532km Moroccan adventure from Marrakesh to Fes visits 6 major cities. UNESCO site Ait Ben Haddou, Todra Gorge's canyons, and Merzouga's luxury desert camp feature prominently. Stops include Boumalne Dades, Erfoud, and Azrou's cedar forests with wild monkey encounters.
- Day 1
Marrakech to Boumalne Dades (6 hours)
Leave Marrakech at 8:00 AM to avoid traffic. You'll travel through the Tizi-n-Tichka pass with its beautiful Atlas Mountain views. If you get carsick easily, bring motion sickness medication. Plan to reach the UNESCO site of Ait Benhaddou before 11:30 AM to beat the tourist crowds. Your journey continues through Skoura's palm groves until you reach Boumalne Dades for the night. A recent traveler noted: "Visiting the Berber homes and garden sites was fascinating, though the day involves significant driving time."
- Day 2
Boumalne Dades to Merzouga Desert
Start your day on the "Road of 1000 Kasbahs" toward Tinghir Oasis. The Todra Gorge is perfect for morning photos, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Stop for lunch in Rissani and try their specialty medfouna bread. You'll arrive at Merzouga in late afternoon for your desert experience. Pack light for the camel trek. The luxury camp provides bedding but pack warm clothes for the surprisingly cold desert nights. As one guest shared: "The camel ride and time in the desert was brief but enjoyable. The food at the camp was great."
- Day 3
Merzouga to Fes (532 km)
Get up at 5:30 AM to watch the desert sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, begin your northern journey through Erfoud and the Middle Atlas Mountains. The scenery changes dramatically from desert to cedar forests near Azrou, where you might spot wild Barbary macaques. One traveler suggests: "Consider visiting in spring or fall – summer heat can be intense, especially with long drives." You'll reach Fes around 6:00 PM, depending on your stops.
What people love about 3 day Morocco tours
- 3 Days High Atlas Mountains and Sahara Adventure
I was able to participate in the 2 Night 3 Day tour of the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert. This experience is one I can confidently say will live with me for the rest of my life. Ali's passion for his country and culture created a tour that provided us with a great look into the history and world we were seeing. The trip really felt like a once in a life time experience
- Merzouga, Ait Benhadou, Dades & Todra gorges (3 days)
The tour was great and the guide was phenomenal. However, I would recommend going longer than three days - the third day was mostly driving to get back to Marrakesh in time for our flight.
- Marrakech To Fes with luxury Camp-3 days
We liked the scenery of the Atlas Mountains, and the first night at the family hostel with food, music, and dancing was pure delight. It was a fantastic experience. The only drawback was the relentless heat, which made the ride difficult without air conditioning in the minibus after 14 hours. I heartily recommend taking the trip, ideally in a different season.
