  • Day 1

    Muscat to Ras Al Hadd

    Leave Muscat early and drive the coastal route to Sur. Visit Quriyat fishing village and the Bimmah Sinkhole along the way. Stop at Fins Beach for a swim but wear water shoes for the rocky surface. Plan about 3 hours to explore Wadi Shab's pools and hiking trails. In the evening visit Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve to see green turtles nesting. Plan your visit after 9 PM for the best viewing and pack some warm clothes.

    
  • Days 2-3

    Desert and Interior

    Start at Wadi Bani Khalid in the early morning. Remember to pack modest swimwear. Drive to Wahiba Sands for sunset dune bashing and spend the night at a desert camp. The next day takes you to historic Nizwa about 2.5 hours away. If you're there on Friday morning you can see the traditional cattle auction. The fort opens at 9 AM and offers great city views but watch for low doorways.

    
  • Days 4-5

    Mountain Adventures

    Visit Misfat Al Abriyyin to explore its ancient mud houses and narrow paths. Drive up to Jebel Shams in a 4x4. The road is steep so check your vehicle's brakes before starting the climb. Get an early 7 AM start the next day for the Balcony Walk along Wadi Ghul with its Grand Canyon-like views. Visit the remote village of Bilad Sayt through Wadi Bani Awf's mountain roads.

    
  • Day 6

    Muscat Exploration

    Start at the Grand Mosque between 8-11 AM except Fridays. Women need long sleeves skirts and head coverings. Visit Muttrah Souq in the late afternoon when it's cooler. You can find good deals on frankincense and silver. Stop by Al Alam Palace to see its impressive gold and blue architecture.

    Salalah Region

    Take a one-hour flight to Salalah. Visit Taqah's castle and the old port of Sumhuram to the east. If you're visiting during khareef season check out the green landscapes and waterfalls at Wadi Darbat. Spend the next day seeing frankincense trees and Mughsail Beach's blowholes which are most impressive at high tide.

    Empty Quarter and Return

    Take a guided day trip to the Empty Quarter's dunes and the lost city of Ubar. Go early before the sand gets too hot. Always travel with an experienced guide since vehicles often get stuck. Spend your final day at Salalah's Al-Baleed Archaeological Park before flying back to Muscat.

  • Days 1-2

    Muscat

    Begin your Omani adventure in the capital city. Visit the Bait Al Zubair Museum and Al Alam Palace. On day 2, take a morning cooking class with local women in Sidab Village. A good tip for the Muttrah Souq is to arrive around 8am before the crowds and heat build up. Be mindful to dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.

    Jebel Shams

    Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque before heading to Jebel Shams, which stands at 3,009 meters. The mountain air gets quite cool, so bring warm clothing. Take the famous "Balcony Walk" along Oman's Grand Canyon on day 4. Good hiking shoes are important since the trails can be unstable.

    Nizwa and Wahiba Sands

    Get to Nizwa early for the Friday cattle market. Visit the 17th-century fort in the morning before it gets too hot. Head to Wahiba Sands for your first night in the desert. Stock up on water in Nizwa before leaving the city behind.

    Empty Quarter

    Journey into the Rub Al Khali where sand dunes reach up to 250 meters. The best photos come just after sunrise or before sunset. Nights in the desert can get surprisingly cold, so pack warm clothes for camping.

    Salalah Region

    Finish your trip in Salalah. Visit the Frankincense Land Museum between 8-11am when it's cooler. For the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, women need full coverage including hair, arms, and legs. A light scarf works well even in hot weather.

  • Day 1

    Muscat Arrival

    Pick up your rental car at Muscat International Airport. Get there early to handle the car rental paperwork since English isn't widely spoken. Get settled at your hotel in the city center. Before your trip, make sure to request a GPS device and roadbook. You'll need both for getting around Oman.

    Muscat Exploration (70km)

    Start your morning at Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque between 8:00-11:00 AM. Women need to wear head coverings. Visit Bait Al Baranda Museum to learn about Muscat's history, then check out Old Muscat's twin forts. For the Muttrah Souk, park at the Corniche and walk in instead of trying to find parking near the market. Visit after 4 PM when it's cooler and less crowded.

    Muscat to Sur (340km)

    This coastal drive is long but beautiful. Stop at Quriyat fishing village about 2 hours from Muscat, then visit the beautiful Bimmah Sinkhole. Bring swimwear if you want to swim. You'll reach Sur by late afternoon. The drive takes about 4 hours without stops.

    Sur and Ras Al Jinz

    Visit Sur's dhow shipyards before 10 AM to watch the craftsmen work. Head to Ras Al Jinz later in the day. One traveler shared: "The turtle watching experience is worth the extra drive, but book your viewing permit in advance as spots fill up quickly."

    Wahiba Sands Desert Experience (200km)

    Start early with a visit to Wadi Bani Khalid. Wear good walking shoes and pack a picnic lunch. You'll need to leave your rental car at the desert camp's parking area before taking 4x4s to the camp. Pack light for the desert night since you can't bring all your luggage.

    Nizwa Area (350km total)

    Stay in Nizwa for two nights. On your first day, explore Al Hamra's mud houses and Misfah village. Start your second day at Nizwa Fort when it opens at 9 AM. The Friday morning cattle auction is a unique experience. Visit Jabreen Castle in the afternoon. The Nizwa Souk is most lively after 4 PM when locals come to shop.

    Jebel Shams to Muscat (300km)

    Leave early for Jebel Shams. The mountain road takes about 2 hours. Bring warm clothes since it gets cold at 3,000 meters. Return to Muscat through Nizwa. Fill your gas tank before heading into the mountains since stations are limited.

    Departure

    Return your car at least 3 hours before your flight. One traveler advised: "Calculate extra for additional kilometers at 50 Baizas per km, as the included mileage isn't quite enough for this itinerary."
