7 Day Spain & Portugal Itinerary, incl. Lisbon and Barcelona
The journey from Portugal's capital through Spain's heartland begins in Lisbon's Belem quarter. Wander through medieval Cáceres, Madrid's iconic Plaza Mayor, and Barcelona's modernist landmarks. Features guided city tours, daily breakfast buffet, and strategically located hotels.
- Days 1-2
Lisbon
Your first afternoon is perfect for getting your bearings. On day two get to Belém before 9 AM to see the Tower and Jerónimos Monastery without the crowds. Later, head up to Bairro Alto for sunset. The Santa Catarina viewpoint gives you great harbor views. A recent visitor shared: "The Restauradores Square area comes alive at night. Try the local ginjinha (cherry liqueur) at the historic A Ginjinha bar, but watch your step on those steep cobblestone streets."
- Day 3
Lisbon to Madrid
This travel day takes you through two countries. Drive about 2 hours through Alentejo to reach Estremoz, a good spot for a coffee break. Stop for lunch in the Medieval city of Cáceres, about 2-3 hours from Estremoz. You'll get to Madrid later in the evening. Head straight to Plaza Mayor where you can find tapas bars open until midnight.
- Day 4
Madrid
- Day 5
Madrid to Barcelona
- Day 6
Barcelona
Focus your morning on Gaudí's architecture. A recent visitor suggests: "Book your Sagrada Familia tickets independently for early morning. The included panoramic tour doesn't go inside, and you'll want dedicated time here." Your afternoon is ideal for walking through Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter.
- Day 7
Barcelona Departure
7 Days in Spain & Portugal, incl. Madrid and Porto
A grand 7-day route through Portugal and Spain takes you from Madrid to Lisbon's Alfama Quarter. Sample Porto's renowned wines and visit Coimbra's university while resting at 4-star accommodations including Yotel Porto and Lutecia Lisbon.
- Day 1
Madrid to Vigo
Leave Madrid's VPT Office on Ferraz Street at 7:45 AM. The 2.5-hour drive to Salamanca fits perfectly with a lunch stop at Plaza Mayor. You'll see the sandstone buildings at their best during midday sun. One traveler noted, "We saw many things in a short amount of time, but it was not a fast pace." The journey continues to Vigo (4.5 hours) where you'll get your first taste of Galician food. A tip for sensitive travelers: bring motion sickness medicine for the mountain roads.
- Day 2
Portuguese Coast
Enter Portugal through Viana do Castelo. Visit the Basilica Santa Luzia for amazing Atlantic views. The old town has steep cobblestone streets so good walking shoes are essential. Drive an hour to Braga to visit the baroque Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary. End your day in Porto. Most visitors prefer staying in the Ribeira district near restaurants and wine cellars.
- Day 3
Porto Exploration
Start at the Stock Exchange Palace right when it opens at 9 AM to avoid crowds. Save your afternoon for Port wine tasting but keep your evening plans light. One visitor shared: "Very interesting itinerary with free time to explore optional activities." End your day with a walk on the Dom Luís I Bridge at sunset.
- Day 4
Coimbra's Academic Heritage
- Day 5
Fátima to Lisbon
- Day 6
Lisbon Discoveries
- Day 7
Return to Madrid
Start early for the long drive (613km) back to Madrid. Stop in Cáceres for lunch and try the local Torta del Casar cheese in the medieval quarter. You should reach Madrid by early evening depending on traffic. Take note of one traveler's advice: "Several of the seatbelts were temperamental" so choose your seat carefully at the start.
7 Day Portugal Itinerary, incl. Lisbon and Porto
Rolling through 11 cities, this week-long Iberian tour costs around $900. Highlights include UNESCO sites in Mérida and Évora, charming coastal towns, and Porto's celebrated wine culture with expert guidance.
- Day 1
Madrid to Lisbon
Leave Madrid early for a 4-hour drive to Mérida. Visit the Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre, which are some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Spain. Stop for lunch in the historic center around 1 PM. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage city of Évora before arriving in Lisbon for the evening. Remember to pack water and light clothing if traveling in summer, as the drive can get quite hot.
- Day 2
Lisbon Exploration
- Day 3
Algarve Adventure
Leave Lisbon early, crossing the massive Vasco da Gama Bridge. Visit Lagos at midday to see its historic port and 16th-century walls. Continue to Cape St. Vincent for spectacular coastal views. Pack a windbreaker, this westernmost point of Europe gets very breezy. Spend the night in Albufeira. The old town has better restaurants than the tourist beach area.
- Day 4
Alentejo Region
- Day 5
Religious Sites
- Day 6
Porto Introduction
- Day 7
Porto Departure
What people love about 7 day Portugal and Spain tours
- Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona
Loved the places we visited, but found changing tour guides every 2 days frustrating. Local guides varied in their style and competence: some never stopped talking for more than 10 secs which is really hard to listen to. Some in our party felt the tour of the REAL MADRID stadium should have been an optional tour, but I loved it even though no sports fan. Our biggest issue was the 6th day, when we were dropped off in old Barcelona with no option of a bus back to our hotel outside the city, despite the tour saying it ended after breakfast on the 7th day. as we were a party of 5 that meant 2 cabs costing us almost 50 Euros and effectively ending our tour there and then!
- Castilla, Galicia & Portugal, 7 days
Orphelia was absolutely wonderful. The coach needs more work: several of the seatbelts were temperamental, there was no wifi as promised and the USB chargers didn’t work.
- Lisbon, Oporto and Fatima
The guide and the driver were great! The only problem that we had with the tour was that meal options were poorly planned. The hotel that we stayed in had Christmas dinner and the tour didn’t reserve dinner for the group and there was nothing open for our group to have dinner. Other than that the tour was great!
