  • Days 1-2

    Transfagarasan Highway & Sibiu

    Start in Bucharest and drive 4 hours to the famous Transfagarasan Highway which is open July through October. If you're visiting at other times head straight to the medieval city of Sibiu. You can stay at the Balea Lake chalet at 2040m elevation or find a local guesthouse in Sibiu. The Transfagarasan's hairpin turns will slow you down but the views are worth it.

    Hunedoara & Turda

    Get to Hunedoara Castle early in the morning before the crowds arrive at this Gothic-Renaissance fortress. It's about a 90-minute drive. From there drive 2 hours to see Turda Salt Mine. This Roman-era mine is one of Europe's largest and stays surprisingly warm year-round. Spend the night in Cluj-Napoca.

    Maramures Region

    Take a 3-hour drive to Breb in Maramures to see authentic rural Romanian life. The "Merry Cemetery" in Sapanta is a must-see with its colorful crosses telling honest and often funny stories about the people buried there.
