10 Day Tajikistan Itinerary, incl. Dushanbe and Pamir Mountains
A private 10-day odyssey spans 915km across Tajikistan, from Dushanbe's archaeological treasures to six nights in the Pamirs. The route encompasses three distinct regions with comfortable 2-3 night stays in each location.
- Days 1-2
Dushanbe:
Spend your first days in Tajikistan's capital at 2,300 feet to adjust to the altitude. Visit the National Archaeological Museum early to see the impressive 13-meter Buddha statue before the crowds arrive. When the afternoon heat peaks, head to Hissar Fortress 25km outside the city. Book the Navruz Palace tour in advance if you want to see inside what was meant to be the world's largest teahouse.
- Days 3-4
Yaghnobi Valley & Iskanderkul:
The remote Yaghnobi Valley is a 3-4 hour drive on rough roads. Pack motion sickness medication just in case. You'll meet people who trace their ancestry to the ancient Sogdian civilization. At Iskanderkul Lake (2,195m), take time to adjust to the new elevation. For the best experience at the 38m "Fan Niagara" waterfall, go early and wear good hiking boots as the trail gets slippery.
- Day 5
Dushanbe to Kalaikhum:
Get ready for a full day on the M41 highway going over Khaburabad Pass at 3,252m. The 380km journey usually takes 7-8 hours due to changing road conditions. Bring plenty of snacks and water since you won't find many stops. You'll see an interesting shift from Tajik to Badakhshani culture along the way.
- Days 6-7
Khorog:
Khorog sits where two rivers meet in the Pamir region. Start at the Ethnographical Museum when it opens to learn about local culture. Visit the Botanical Garden before noon to avoid summer heat. It's one of the highest gardens in the world at 2,320m. The University of Central Asia offers great views of the valley.
- Days 8-9
