- Day 1
São Jorge Island Arrival
Book a morning flight to São Jorge Airport since afternoon fog can delay flights. The island is small, so transfers to your hotel take about 20 minutes. Spend your first day getting settled and adjusting to island time. In the evening, walk through Velas' historic center and try local restaurants serving fresh-caught seafood.
- Days 2-3
São Jorge's Famous Fajãs
Dedicate two days to exploring São Jorge's fajãs - flat coastal areas created by ancient landslides. Visit Fajã dos Vimes early to see Europe's northernmost coffee plantation while morning fog creates ideal growing conditions. When hiking to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, pack hiking boots and trekking poles since the trail gets steep on the volcanic terrain.
- Days 4-5
Pico Island Adventures
Catch the morning ferry to Pico Island (1 hour 15 minutes). Plan your Mount Pico hike carefully since weather changes rapidly. As one hiker noted: "Clear mornings often cloud over by 11am. Start at sunrise for the best summit views of neighboring islands." Set aside a full day to explore the UNESCO-listed vineyards, where historic volcanic stone walls called currais shield grape vines from Atlantic winds.
- Day 6
Whale Watching & Natural Pools
Book a morning whale watching tour when the sea is calmest. The waters between Pico and Faial are perfect for spotting cetaceans. In the afternoon, visit Pico's natural pools at Cachorro - remember water shoes for the sharp volcanic rocks. A visitor suggests: "The pools at Barca are less crowded than Lajes but equally beautiful. Go at low tide for the best swimming conditions."
- Day 7
Faial Island Exploration
Take the 30-minute ferry to Faial. Start at Capelinhos Volcano for dramatic morning photos of its moon-like landscape. Visit Horta Marina in the afternoon and stop at Peter Café Sport for the island's best gin & tonics. Check the weather before heading to the caldeira viewpoint since it often gets cloudy after midday.

8 Days in Azores, incl. Ponta Delgada and Furnas
Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, Sete Cidades, and Furnas reveal their charms over 8 days. The 4-star Sao Miguel Park Hotel serves as base for whale watching, volcanic landscapes, and traditional Cozido das Furnas. Daily breakfast and expert guides included at approx. $160 per day.

Ponta Delgada Arrival
- Day 2
Whale Watching
Take a short 15-minute walk to the marina for morning whale watching. The Azores attracts 27 different cetacean species throughout the year. Book the earliest tour you can since morning waters are usually calmer. Remember motion sickness pills and a light waterproof jacket. Book this early in your trip in case weather forces a reschedule.
- Day 3
Ponta Delgada Exploration
Visit the city's main attractions including the three-arched Portas da Cidade and São Sebastião Church. Stop by Carlos Machado Museum to learn about Azorean history. Take an evening walk along Avenida Infante Dom Henrique waterfront. Keep in mind that most restaurants close between lunch and dinner.
- Day 4
Lagoa do Fogo & Ribeira Grande
- Day 5
Sete Cidades Lakes
Begin with a pineapple plantation visit before heading to Sete Cidades to see the famous twin lakes. Visit Vista do Rei viewpoint in the morning for the best photos before afternoon fog rolls in. Bring extra layers for changing mountain weather. Take some quiet time at Santiago Lake away from tourist spots.
- Day 6
Furnas Valley Experience
Spend the day exploring Furnas Valley's geothermal sites. Start at Terra Nostra Park when it opens at 8:30 AM. Watch the traditional "Cozido das Furnas" being pulled from volcanic steam vents for lunch. Wear dark swimwear in the iron-rich thermal pools to avoid stains. End your day at Gorreana, Europe's oldest tea plantation.

What people love about 10 Day Azores Archipelago Tours
- Best of Porto & Azores in 9 days
Having previously explored Lisbon many years ago, we were eager to delve deeper into Portugal's diverse landscapes. Our second visit to Porto and Ponta Delgada, though bustling, reinforced our decision to return. The country's charm and hospitality are truly unmatched. Our accommodations, were impeccably located, clean, and comfortable. The Douro Valley hotel views were a standout. Sao Miguel Island, however, was the crown jewel of this trip and we will definitely be back to explore more islands in the Azores.
