4 Day Chapada Diamantina Itinerary, incl. Lençóis and Igatu
An action-packed 4-day tour features daily highlights in Chapada Diamantina. First day reveals historic Lençóis. Second day takes you to Poço Azul cave and Igatu village. Third day showcases Mosquito Waterfall and Serra das Paridas archaeology. Final morning includes airport transfer after 3 nights in Lençóis.
- Day 1
Lençóis Historic Center
Start your adventure in Lençóis, the welcoming gateway town to the national park. The airport transfer takes about 45 minutes. Plan to arrive before 2 PM to join the afternoon walking tour. The historic center showcases European-influenced architecture from the 19th-century diamond boom. Take time to explore Rua das Pedras (Stone Street) where colonial buildings now house local artisan shops. A quick tip: wear sturdy shoes since the colonial cobblestones get slippery in wet weather.
- Day 2
Poço Azul Cave & Igatu Village
Drive one hour to Poço Azul, a limestone cave with a stunning blue pool. You'll need water shoes to navigate the cave entrance safely. Visit in the morning for the best photo lighting of the clear waters. After enjoying a traditional Bahian lunch, take a 45-minute drive to Igatu, known as the 'City of Stones.' The village is built entirely from local stone and features interesting mining ruins. Visit the art gallery first since it usually closes at 4 PM.
- Day 3
Mosquito Waterfall & Serra das Paridas
Start with a moderate 1.5 km hike to Mosquito Waterfall, which stands 50 meters tall. Bring a dry bag for your camera because the spray at the base gets pretty intense. The morning hike takes about 3 hours round trip. Stop for lunch at a local farm before driving 40 minutes to Serra das Paridas to check out ancient rock art. If you plan to see the deeper cave paintings, pack a headlamp. Wear long pants on the trails to protect against thorny plants.

- Day 1
Lençóis Introduction
Begin your Chapada Diamantina adventure in Lençóis. Head to Parque da Muritiba for a 5km riverside walk along the Lençóis River. The trail requires careful footing on loose rocks. Take refreshing swims at Cachoeira da Primavera, Cachoeirinha and Poço Halley. One traveler notes: "Usually I would have tried to do a lot without a guide, but considering I don't speak Portuguese, having guidance was essential for navigating these rocky trails safely."
- Day 2
Cave Exploration & Pai Inácio
Leave early for the Iraquara limestone cave system (150km away). Visit Pratinha Cave for a morning swim in crystal-clear waters before 10 AM to avoid crowds. Stop for traditional Bahian lunch before exploring Lapa Doce Cave with its ancient stalactites and stalagmites. Watch sunset from Morro do Pai Inácio viewpoint. The cave floors can be slippery so wear shoes with good grip.
- Day 3
Fumaça Waterfall Trek
Take on the challenging 12km round-trip hike to Cachoeira da Fumaça Brazil's highest waterfall at 400m. Start early with a 90-minute drive from Lençóis to Vale do Capão trailhead. Expect steep stone steps for the first 2km before the trail levels out. Pack enough water and snacks since there's no food on the trail. You can cool off at Riachinho waterfall afterward. This high-altitude trail needs good fitness and comfort with heights.

- Day 2
Poço do Diabo and Cave Exploration
Start your day at Mucugezinho River and head to Poço do Diabo waterfall early. The 20-meter waterfall makes a great swimming spot. Wear water shoes since the rocks get slippery. In the afternoon, visit Lapa Doce Cave, one of Brazil's biggest limestone cave networks. The paths are in good shape but bring a light jacket. The cave stays around 72°F all year.
- Day 3
Muritiba Municipal Park
Take on the 4km trail through Muritiba Park in the morning before it gets too hot. You'll need lots of water since there isn't much shade. The Colored Sands Salon looks best in morning light. A recent visitor shared: "The natural whirlpools at Serrano River were mesmerizing, but don't forget your hiking sandals – the rocks can be sharp."
- Day 4
Ribeirão do Meio
- Day 5
Poço Encantado and Poço Azul
These blue pools are some of Chapada Diamantina's most incredible sights. Visit Poço Encantado first for the best morning light then go to Poço Azul for a swim. Note that Poço Encantado only allows visitors over 12. For the best photos visit between April and September when sunlight hits the cave water just right.
- Day 6
Lençóis Exploration
- Day 7
Return to Salvador
