7 Day Nepal Itinerary, incl. Kathmandu and Chitwan
Your route covers 3 major destinations: Kathmandu Valley's UNESCO sites, Nagarkot's sunrise viewpoints, and Chitwan's wildlife. 158km drive to Chitwan National Park via East-West Highway. Visit 5 World Heritage sites and spot 700+ wildlife species.
- Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu
- Day 2
Kathmandu Heritage Sites
Visit Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) early before crowds gather. One traveler shared: "The morning light on the golden stupas is incredible, but bring small bills for entrance fees as vendors rarely have change." Visit Pashupatinath Temple next and be sure to dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. End your day at Boudhanath Stupa where you can get great photos in the late afternoon light.
- Day 3
Patan and Bhaktapur
Start your day watching the sunrise in Nagarkot just 40 minutes from Kathmandu. Visit medieval Patan to see its Durbar Square and the Krishna Temple built from a single stone. Spend your afternoon in Bhaktapur exploring the 55-window palace and Nyatapola Temple. The old stone streets are uneven so wear shoes good for walking.
- Day 4
Transfer to Chitwan
The trip to Chitwan National Park takes 5-6 hours on mountain roads. You might want to bring motion sickness medicine if you get carsick easily. The drive takes longer during monsoon season from June through September. Plan to arrive with enough time to watch the traditional Tharu cultural show in the evening.
- Day 5
Chitwan Safari
Start your safari before dawn to see the most wildlife. One visitor noted: "Having our naturalist guide made all the difference. His trained eye spotted a rhino camouflaged in the tall grass that we would have missed completely." You can watch elephant bathing later and take a relaxing boat ride on the Rapti River to look for crocodiles.
- Day 6
Birdwatching and Return to Kathmandu

7 Day Nepal Itinerary, incl. Kathmandu and Pokhara
A comprehensive 7-day route takes you through Kathmandu, Nagarkot, Bandipur, Pokhara, and Sarangkot. The package includes 6 breakfasts, 1 dinner, and visits to 4 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Marvel at sunrise from 2,211m at Nagarkot and ancient temples.
- Day 1
Kathmandu Arrival
Your Nepal adventure begins at Tribhuvan International Airport. Plan at least an hour to reach your Kathmandu hotel due to heavy traffic. "Kathmandu's evening traffic can be chaotic - arrange your airport pickup in advance to avoid confusion." Take this first evening to adjust to the altitude (4,600 feet) and enjoy your first traditional Nepali dinner.
- Day 2
Kathmandu - Nagarkot
Start your morning at Bouddhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas worldwide. Visit before 9 AM to see morning prayers and beat the crowds. A 1.5-hour drive takes you to Bhaktapur's medieval streets. Wear good walking shoes for the uneven streets. Your day ends in Nagarkot (2,211m) with sunset views of the Himalayas and, on clear days, Mount Everest.
- Day 3
Nagarkot - Bandipur
Get up early for an unforgettable Himalayan sunrise. Pack warm clothes as temperatures often drop close to freezing. After breakfast, take the 4-5 hour drive to Bandipur, a beautiful Newari town at 1,030m. The roads are rough, so consider motion sickness pills. Your afternoon is free to walk around this car-free village and take in views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna peaks.
- Day 4
Bandipur - Pokhara
- Day 5
Sarangkot & Pokhara
Start early for sunrise at Sarangkot viewpoint (1,592m). One visitor shared: "The 5 AM start was worth it - watching the sun hit Machapuchare peak was incredible. Bring a thermos of hot tea and find a spot early as it gets crowded." In the afternoon, explore Pokhara's caves. Mahendra Cave offers a cool escape from summer heat.
- Day 6
Pokhara - Kathmandu
The 6-7 hour drive back to Kathmandu offers views of terraced hills and traditional villages. Visit the Monkey Temple later in the day when the light is perfect for photos. Take the 365 steps slowly and keep food hidden from the territorial monkeys.
- Day 7
Kathmandu Departure
If your flight schedule allows, visit Kathmandu Durbar Square in the morning. While some temples are still being fixed after the 2015 earthquake, the ancient architecture is fascinating. Get to the airport 3 hours before your international flight to handle the long security lines.
