  • Days 1-2

    Lisbon

    Start in the capital and head to Jeronimos Monastery right when it opens at 8:30 AM to avoid crowds. "The monastery's cloisters were a highlight, but get there before tour buses arrive." Spend your afternoon exploring the Belém district and walk along the waterfront to see the Tower and Discoveries Monument.

    Central Portugal

    Travel north through medieval Obidos (wear good shoes since cobblestones get slippery in the rain) to the coastal town of Nazaré. Visit the monastery in Alcobaça to see the beautiful facing tombs that tell the love story of Pedro and Inês.     Porto Region

    Alentejo

    Algarve Coast

    Stay in Lagos to explore the coastline. Walk the cliffs to Ponta da Piedade but bring water and sun protection since there's no shade. Visit Sagres fortress for sunset. Drive back to Lisbon through Serra da Arrábida.

    Madeira Island

    Take a morning flight to Funchal to avoid afternoon winds. Ride the cable car up to Monte for great views. Visit the farmers' market early for the best selection. "Don't miss the natural pools at Porto Moniz—go early afternoon when sun warms the volcanic pools."

    Lisbon

    Come back for final sightseeing. Stay in Alfama to be close to fado music venues. Make dinner reservations in Bairro Alto since restaurants get busy after 8 PM.

  • Days 1-2

    Faro & Silves

    Arrive in Faro by mid-morning to handle your car rental without rushing. Visit the old town through Arco da Vila. Park near Teatro Lethes since parking can be tough to find. Visit the Capela dos Ossos (Bone Chapel) first before the crowds arrive after 11 AM. The next morning drive to Silves (65km) and plan your castle visit for late afternoon to avoid the intense hilltop sun.

    Silves & Lagos Area

    Stay in Silves as your base. The cobblestone streets can be slippery so bring good walking shoes. Take a trip to Lagos (40 minutes west) and get to Ponta da Piedade before 9 AM to avoid tour groups and capture the best photos of the rocks. Stop by Pastelaria Central in the main square for the local Morgado de Silves cake.

    
  • Days 5-6

    Beja & Surrounds

    The drive to Beja takes you into Alentejo's unique landscape. Start with the 13th-century castle. The tower's spiral staircase is narrow but the panoramic views make the climb worth it. Visit nearby Serpa but plan around the 2-5 PM siesta when most shops close.

    
  • Days 7-9

    Évora

    You'll need three full days to explore UNESCO-listed Évora. Get to the Chapel of Bones right at 9 AM opening to beat the crowds. Visit the Roman Temple of Diana at sunset for beautiful views. Stop by Restaurante São Luís for local migas (bread stew) with pork tenderloin.

    
  • Days 10-12

    Tavira

    This fishing village offers something different from inland Portugal. Check local tidal times for Ilha de Tavira beach access. Look for signs to Igreja de Santa Maria to find your way to Castelo de Tavira. Try the local folhados pastries in the morning when they're fresh.

    
  • Days 13-15

    Olhão & Return to Faro

    Finish your trip in Olhão the Algarve's main fishing port. Visit the fish market early at 7 AM for the best experience. On your final day it's just a 15km drive back to Faro Airport but leave extra time during summer.

  • Days 1-2

    Lisbon

    Porto Region

    Walk through Porto's Ribeira district and cross Dom Luis I bridge to try port wine in Vila Nova de Gaia. Take the old tram to Foz do Douro for ocean views. Visit Guimarães, Portugal's original capital. Bring good walking shoes for the narrow medieval streets.

    
  • Days 7-8

    Inland Route

    Drive through Douro Valley's wine country to Viseu. Stop at Quinta da Aveleda to see their beautiful gardens. Head south to Evora in Alentejo. Plan indoor activities from 1-4 PM since summer temperatures often go above 100°F.

    
  • Days 9-10

    Algarve Coast

    Stay in Lagos to easily reach beaches and cliffs. Book a morning boat trip to Ponta da Piedade when the water is calmest. Watch the sunset at Cape St. Vincent. A local traveler says: "The boardwalks along the cliffs can be slippery - wear rubber-soled shoes and bring a light jacket for the strong winds."

    
  • Days 11-13

    São Miguel, Azores

    Fly to Ponta Delgada in the afternoon to avoid Lisbon's morning traffic. Visit Sete Cidades crater lake early since afternoon fog often blocks the view. Check out Europe's only tea plantation at Maia and the geothermal sites in Furnas. Bring different clothing layers as the weather changes quickly.

    Lisbon

    Back to Lisbon for final exploring. Take a day trip to Sintra on the first train before 9 AM to avoid Pena Palace crowds. Plan your last dinner in Bairro Alto but make reservations since good restaurants fill up fast.
