  1. Day 1 Auckland to Lake Tarawera. Distance: Up to 10 km (6.2 miles), 3 hours hiking Elevation: +480 m (15 ft) / -380 m (1,200 ft)
  2. Day 2 Tarawera to Whirinaki. Distance: Up to 8.5 km (5.3 miles), 3.5 hours hiking Elevation: +450 m (1,400 ft) / -750 m (2,450 ft)
  3. Day 3 Whirinaki. Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles), 5 hours hiking Elevation: +430 m (1,400 ft) / -650 m (2,100 ft)
  4. Day 4 Whirinaki to Whakapapa. Distance: Up to 3 km (2 miles), 1.5 hours hiking Elevation: +/-55 m (180 ft)
  5. Day 5 Whakapapa to Waihohonu Hut. Distance: Up to 15 km (9.5 miles), 6 hours hiking Elevation: +/-300 m (1,000 ft)
  6. Day 6 Waihohonu Hut to Oturere Hut. Distance: 8.5 km (5 miles), 3 hours hiking Elevation: +650 m (2,100 ft) / -350 m (1,150 ft)
  7. Day 7 Oturere Hut to Whakapapa. Distance: Up to 12 km (7.5 miles), 7 hours hiking Elevation: +500 m (1,600 ft) / -800 m (2,600 ft)
  8. Day 8 Whakapapa to Wellington. Distance: 1 km, 1–2 hours hiking

    Went for some great hikes. Really loved the Abel Tasman and Mt. Cook. John and Eva were always helpful and attentive to everyone's needs. Eva produced some magnificent lunches.

    I was on the Ultimate South Island Adventure in February and really enjoyed the whole of it, including the rainy days! The communication and organisation leading up to the trip and on it was very good. Our guide for the 2 weeks, Kathryn, was excellent and I think really made it work very well, keeping us informed and organised as to what was happening all the time, was a wealth of knowledge on what we encountered and was a very nice person to spend 2 weeks with, as well as all the guests on the trip. It's a great way to sample New Zealand and you see a lot and the few people who took the North Island part as well enjoyed that as much. I would certainly use Hiking NZ the next time I am going on holiday there.
