What people love about Lake Titicaca Tours
- Puno & Titicaca Islands
Really great tour, saw a lot, guide was very lively and informative
- Peru Encompassed
Amazing trip - Intrepid were awesome. It was a bit hectic as we moved around such a lot. There were a couple of restaurants I would not choose to eat in as they were a ripoff - Hot Springs in Agua Calientes was one and service was poor, sullen waiter. Will definitely NOT recommend that one. Toilets on Inca trail were unnecessarily disgusting and could be improved by changing them adding a toilet bowl to contain excrement or even long drops. Our tour guide Maritza Chacacanta Huari was incredible and really mothered us. Thomas was also amazing on our trail and Ronald too. We had 2 people with us who were deaf and dumb and they went out of their way to communicate everything to them. Loved the experience. The loyalty and dedication to Peru and Intrepid was constant and real
What our customers ask about Lake Titicaca Tours & Trips
When is the best time to visit Lake Titicaca for a lakes tour?
Lake Titicaca's dry season from May to October provides optimal conditions with clear skies and daytime temperatures around 68°F/20°C. The José Antonio Hotel in Puno serves as a convenient base during these busy months. Despite the lake's elevation at 12500 feet bringing year-round cool temperatures visitors find the conditions ideal. One TourRadar traveler noted "The weather at Lake Titicaca was perfect for exploring the floating islands and taking in the incredible views across the lake." Tours to Uros Islands and Taquile Island continue to operate during the rainy months of November through April primarily in morning hours.
How physically demanding are Lake Titicaca lakes tours?
The tours require moderate fitness due to the high altitude environment at 12500 feet. Taquile Island presents the main physical challenge with approximately 500 stone steps between its harbor and plaza. The floating Uros Islands require less exertion but need steady footing on the reed surfaces. Hotels like Hacienda Puno provide comfortable rest stops between explorations. One TourRadar traveler shared "The altitude takes some getting used to but our guide made sure we took it slow. The walking wasn't too strenuous and there were plenty of breaks to enjoy the spectacular lake views."
How much time should I allow for a Lake Titicaca lakes tour?
A 2-3 day visit allows for a complete lake experience including the Uros floating islands Taquile Island and an overnight homestay. Most travelers choose hotels like Hacienda Puno as their base. According to a TourRadar traveler "Three days was perfect - we didn't feel rushed and could really appreciate the unique culture and stunning scenery of the lake. The boat rides between islands also offer amazing photo opportunities of the deep blue waters against the mountain backdrop."
What type of accommodation can I expect during a Lake Titicaca lakes tour?
Options range from modern hotels in Puno such as GHL Hotel Lago Titicaca to authentic island homestays. Homestay accommodations offer basic rooms with warm bedding for cold nights. A TourRadar traveler shares "The homestay was basic but incredibly authentic - our host family on Taquile Island provided clean rooms and delicious home-cooked meals." Puno hotels feature standard amenities like hot water restaurants and internet while properties such as Sonesta Posadas del Inca incorporate traditional Andean design elements.
How does altitude affect visitors to Lake Titicaca and what precautions should I take?
At 3812 meters (12507 feet) visitors need to consider altitude adjustment seriously. Plan for 1-2 days of light activity before starting tours. A TourRadar traveler suggests "Take the first day easy in Puno to adjust to the altitude and stay hydrated - most hotels like GHL Lago Titicaca offer coca tea to help." Health guidelines recommend avoiding alcohol maintaining hydration and consulting healthcare providers before travel especially for those with existing medical conditions.
