3 Day Botswana Safari Itinerary, incl. Maun and Moremi Game Reserve
The immersive game drives run from 6:00-16:00, offering prime wildlife viewing opportunities. Dawn departures catch animals at their most active, complemented by scenic picnic lunches and flexible return times based on wildlife encounters.
- Day 1
Maun to Boteti River Lodge
Start your safari with a quick 20-minute transfer from Maun Airport to your lodge along the Boteti River. Try to arrive before 2 PM to make the most of afternoon activities. After settling in you'll visit Xobe Village to watch traditional dance performances and meet local craftspeople. Pack light clothes you can layer since afternoons get quite warm. "The Boteti Lodge accommodations were wonderful, as well as the meals provided," according to a recent guest. End your day with dinner at the lodge's open-air boma under a star-filled sky.
- Day 2
Full-Day Safari Experience
You have two excellent options today. Take a full-day mokoro (traditional canoe) safari through the Okavango Delta with a Bayei tribal guide, including walks on the islands. You'll spot wildlife ranging from tiny reed frogs to large animals coming to drink. Or choose a game drive in Moremi/Khwai Reserve. One visitor notes: "The ride to Moremi Game Reserve is over 3 hours each way, about half on unpacked roads. Those up top were very cold even with sides down, so bring warm layers for morning drives."
- Day 3
Final Morning and Departure
- Day 1
Maun to Delta Bush Camp
A one-hour drive in an open 4WD vehicle takes you from Maun to the mokoro station. Pack light with quick-dry clothing since space is limited in the narrow mokoro. Your first afternoon includes a game walk where guides teach you to spot wildlife tracks and signs. Remember to wear neutral colors to avoid disturbing the animals. At night you'll sleep in a comfortable 2.4m dome tent with proper bedding.
- Day 2
Deep Delta Exploration
Wake up before sunrise when elephants and hippos are most active. Your day mixes mokoro rides through delta channels with guided walks on islands. Take shelter during the intense midday heat, which often reaches 95°F/35°C. The afternoon offers a chance to swim in a safe delta area and learn traditional poling techniques. Nighttime brings incredible stargazing opportunities. With no light pollution, the Milky Way shines brilliantly above camp. Pack a warm layer since delta temperatures can drop to 50°F/10°C even in summer months.
- Day 3
Final Morning and Return to Maun
- Day 1
Maun Arrival & Boteti River
Plan to arrive at Maun Airport before 2 PM to make the most of your first day. The 45-minute drive to Boteti Tented Safari Lodge gives you time to take in the landscape. After checking in and having lunch you'll get ready for the main event: a 2-hour sunset mokoro safari on the Boteti River. Animals often gather at the river between 4-6 PM for drinking. A quick note about mokoros: these traditional dugout canoes can be a bit wobbly for newcomers so keep your camera secure.
- Day 2
Moremi Game Reserve or Okavango Delta
Your day starts early at 5:30 AM with coffee and a light breakfast. You can choose between two great options: Option 1: A full-day game drive through Moremi/Khwai. You'll leave around 6:30 AM when predators are most active. The drive from camp takes about 2.5 hours. The open vehicles give you great views but not much shade so bring plenty of water. Option 2: Spend the day on a mokoro safari in the Okavango Delta including a guided nature walk. You'll spend more time on water and less time driving. Stick to neutral-colored clothing and good sun protection since the water reflects a lot of sunlight. Both options include packed meals. You'll be back at camp for dinner under the stars. One visitor shared: "Watching elephants drink from the river while we had sundowners on the deck was magical - but bring a warm layer as temperatures drop quickly after sunset."
