- Ting-Yu· September 1st, 2024TLDR: Prepare to compromise as customers, as the company will not compromise on anything negative on their end. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. Here is a summary below, starting from positive: +1 star destination: for the amazing animals you will see! Beautiful landscape, plenty of wildlife around every corner. All the different national parks and reserves offer a different experience and wildlife. definitely ask your driver to take your time to explore them, you never know what you will see! +1 star for the in-ground staff: From helping you with local sims to cooking delicious meals, helping you reach destinations and driving, and guiding and singing along with our group in the car etc! -1 star false advertising: on Day 4, we (x2) were transferred from our original driver to another before heading to Amboseli National Park (NP). We had x6 people in our first van, and x6 in the second (new) one. HOWEVER, during a pit stop to get some fuel, our driver informed us that another traveler would be joining us, making it 7 people in the van. This was totally unacceptable as I SPECIFICALLY filtered the safaris by the amount of people, since I know once it gets too crowded, you will miss out on some actions. This was raised to the Exciting Africa manager on Whatsapp, where we asked to be transferred to a different vehicle, which we received an utterly disappointing and dismissive response (Summary: bear with us, you will have 7 in the van but it is big enough. The driver can show you how to stand). As the passenger in the back seat, you can stand up, but cannot last for even a few minutes as the back of the middle seat will tightly press against your body this whole time. You WILL end up with a sore back and neck (as I have tried multiple times to stand for prolonged periods), and there are many possibilities for a neck injury during the rougher terrain drives. -1 star Communication: Almost no communication about things like itinerary changes throughout the trip. For example, we only found out that the order of NP visits will be completely different at our first Tanzanian briefing (i.e. instead of 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 it is now 1 -> 3 -> 4 -> 2). Although we did visit all the different places as advertised, at least some level of notice should be expected before changing the itinerary, since many times campsite staff asks where you are going the next day, which most of us will have no clue as the itinerary was changed drastically without giving us at least a PDF or written notice informing of the new schedule. Some of our accommodations were also different from the ones listed here on the website. Also, other travelers with a different agent would Whatsapp you to check to see if you're okay, have any questions about crossing the border, etc. There was no message unless we initiated, such as a demand or question mentioned previously. We also asked for a receipt, in which the company said they would provide but did not. -1 star Organisation: This will overlap with the previous point. Some places will only provide limited food, and you WILL go to sleep starving sometimes. Also, if things go wrong somewhere else, YOU will get affected too. For example, another jeep about 200km north of our camp broke down, and our driver had to leave us after lunch to rescue them, with another driver coming to us. On the day where we leave Serengeti, the schedule is to have an early morning drive, then lunch, before heading out slowly on a game drive while we make our way to Ngorongoro (long drive). Our new driver arrived around 1-2h after we finished lunch. We wanted to have a relaxed time leaving Serengeti but were told we were in a rush and there would be no stops until our destination. We lost a relaxed game drive because SOMEONE ELSE encountered problems. We also started the day late (about 8 am when we left camp), whereas the previous day left at 6 am. If it was known the driver would arrive late (as they usually do, being on time usually isn't as strict as in other countries), then the company could've compromised on their end and started the day earlier? Also, the jeep that picked us up was much older, and we had to drive WITHOUT HEADLIGHT to our destination. The odometer also does not work, and the car had a problem at the end that we had to get all dropped off at a resting place next to the road, to get picked up by someone in a day-to-day car, for the 2.5h drive with 6 people + luggage. As a side note, we talked to 2 other travelers who had a similar itinerary as us, yet they paid >$1000 USD less than us? they also had more luxury accommodations in Tanzania? Also for optional activities (besides from hot air balloon), if you opt-out, you will probably just sit somewhere for 1-2h doing nothing. Your overall experience will depend on the driver too. Some are more talkative, some quieter, and some like to explain or drive slow/fast. I am not too sure if this whole experience is shared throughout other companies in the two countries, but this was our experience overall.Show moreTrip date: August 2024
- Monique· July 16th, 2024If you are a solo female and want to be in a group tour, ie the same group from start to finish, then this is not for you. I am a 60-year-old woman and was travelling solo. I travel a lot by myself but, this time, I wanted to be in a group. Before booking, I deliberately asked the agency about the number of people joining and stressed that at no point, did I want to be left on my own but want to be in a group setting. And I was reassured of this. This was not the case, however. And, at the end, I was indeed left on my own to travel from Arusha to Nairobi, going through the horrible immigration Tanzania/Kenya immigration process. The two stars I'm giving is for the drivers/guides because they deserve them. But, the organisation from the agency was hopeless. In 13 days of the "tour" I had 9 different drivers and was moved several times to join different people. All the drivers were very nice, kind and sympathetic to my issue but when I tried to take it up with the office, dealing with a guy called Albert, he would brush my issue and even laugh. At one point he put the phone down on me, which I thought was very rude. They were very vague about who was picking me up from the hotel in Arusha. In the end, a guy who doesn't speak English turned up in an empty bus. I was not going to get onto a bus by myself not knowing who or where. The agency "representative" did not turn up either. I refused to get on the bus until someone spoke to me in English from the shuttle bus office. I was quite concerned/worried/afraid because the empty bus was going all over Arusha (I had no idea where I was) and finally arrived at the Arusha bus station. The guy I spoke to earlier put me on a shuttle bus from Arusha to Nairobi (7 hours) - of course a shuttle bus will have other people on it, but none of the people I had been travelling with, from the several groups I joined. I was left alone with with a group of strangers, and they weren't tourists, as Albert kept insisting. He told me that the driver of the shuttle would help me through the immigration process. He didn't. The police officers at the border helped me. When I arrived at Nairobi bus station - horrible, horrible place with lots of men gawping at you and trying to get your attention for a "taxi" - I refused to get off the bus until my driver arrived. Luckily he was there within minutes. Besides that, the itinerary changed in the Tanzania part. They just change things to suit themselves and whatever benefits them. True, I saw all the parks and animals but my plan was to be in a certain place for my 60th birthday and, of course, I wasn't because they changed the itinerary around. Also, the agency does not notify you beforehand that in some of the sites there may be no hot water and/or electricity. So be prepared for cold showers and take torches with you. True, this was a budget safari, but it still cost a lot of money for me, money which I had been saving for years. So, to summarize : 1) this is NOT a tour but a series of mini excursions joined together, with different people with every change 2) if you're a solo female, it's not nice to be left alone without fellow travellers/companions. 3) be prepared for no hot water/electricity.Show moreTrip date: June 2024
- JNJenani· February 27th, 2024Embarking on a 13-day budget camping safari through Kenya and Tanzania was an adventure that exceeded all expectations. From the vast plains of the Serengeti to the majestic landscapes of the Maasai Mara, every moment was filled with awe-inspiring sights, thrilling wildlife encounters, and unforgettable experiences. Our journey began in Nairobi, where we were warmly welcomed by our knowledgeable guides from Exciting Africa Holidays. From the very start, their passion for wildlife and dedication to providing an authentic safari experience shone through. With a small group of like-minded travelers, we set off on our adventure, ready to explore the best of East Africa on a budget. The first stop on our itinerary was the iconic Maasai Mara National Reserve. Camping under the starlit sky in the heart of the Mara allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the sights and sounds of the wilderness. Our days were spent traversing the savannah in search of the Big Five, and we were not disappointed. From herds of elephants to prides of lions, every game drive brought us closer to nature in its rawest form. Crossing the border into Tanzania, we ventured into the legendary Serengeti National Park. The endless plains stretched as far as the eye could see, dotted with acacia trees and grazing wildlife. Witnessing the Great Migration was a highlight of our journey, as thousands of wildebeests and zebras thundered across the plains in search of greener pastures. Camping amidst the Serengeti's vastness was a humbling experience, reminding us of the true essence of Africa. Continuing our adventure, we explored the wonders of Ngorongoro Crater, a natural amphitheater teeming with wildlife. Descending into the crater, we were greeted by a plethora of species, from rhinos to hippos, against the backdrop of the crater's towering walls. Camping on the crater rim provided us with panoramic views of this natural wonder, creating memories that will last a lifetime. As our journey came to an end, we made our way to Amboseli National Park, where the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro loomed large on the horizon. The sight of elephants roaming freely against the snow-capped peak was a fitting finale to our East African adventure. Gathering around the campfire one last time, we reflected on the incredible experiences we shared and the friendships we forged along the way. In conclusion, the 13-day budget camping safari through Kenya and Tanzania was a dream come true for budget-conscious travelers seeking an authentic African adventure. With Exciting Africa Holidays /Tourradar, every aspect of the journey was meticulously planned, from comfortable camping accommodations to unforgettable wildlife encounters. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the best of East Africa without breaking the bank.Show moreTrip date: December 2023
- ADAli· February 27th, 2024Unforgettable Adventure: Camping Safari Group Tour through Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Hell's Gate, and Amboseli with my Family Embarking on a camping safari through the iconic landscapes of Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Hell's Gate, and Amboseli was an adventure that surpassed all expectations. Organized as a group joining tour, every moment was filled with awe-inspiring sights, thrilling encounters, and unforgettable experiences. Our journey began in the legendary Masai Mara, where the vast savannah stretched as far as the eye could see. Our knowledgeable guide navigated us through the plains, ensuring we witnessed the spectacle of the Great Migration. The sight of thousands of wildebeests and zebras thundering across the Mara River was a breathtaking scene that will forever be etched in my memory. Camping under the starlit sky amidst the sounds of the wilderness added a sense of authenticity to the experience. Next, we ventured to Lake Nakuru, a paradise for bird enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike. The shores of the lake were painted pink by flocks of flamingos, creating a surreal vista against the backdrop of lush greenery. Our safari drives around the lake afforded us close encounters with rhinos, giraffes, and elusive leopards, making each moment a thrilling discovery. Hell's Gate National Park offered a unique opportunity to explore on foot, immersing ourselves in the rugged beauty of the landscape. Hiking through the dramatic gorges and towering cliffs, we felt a sense of exhilaration as we discovered natural hot springs and encountered a variety of wildlife up close. Camping in the heart of the park allowed us to connect with nature in its purest form, far away from the distractions of modern life. Our final destination was Amboseli National Park, where the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro provided a stunning backdrop to our safari adventures. The sight of elephants roaming freely against the snow-capped peak was a sight straight out of a postcard. We spent our days exploring the vast plains, observing lions, cheetahs, and buffalo, while our evenings were spent gathered around the campfire, exchanging stories under the vast African sky. Throughout the journey, the camaraderie among our fellow travelers added to the richness of the experience. Sharing meals, swapping stories, and marveling at nature's wonders together created bonds that will last a lifetime. Our guides were not only knowledgeable about the wildlife and ecosystems but also passionate about conservation, instilling in us a deeper appreciation for the natural world.Show moreTrip date: January 2024
- JNJenani· February 27th, 2024Embarking on a camping safari through Kenya and Tanzania with Zack guiding us through the wonders of Kenya's safari sector and Salim leading us through the Serengeti and other parks was an absolute delight! As a group of young ladies, safety was a top priority for us, and we couldn't have felt more secure and cared for throughout the entire journey. Zack's expertise in navigating Kenya's safari sector was evident from the moment we set out. His deep understanding of the local terrain, wildlife behavior, and safety protocols immediately put us at ease. Not only did he ensure that we had close encounters with Kenya's magnificent wildlife, but he also took the time to educate us about conservation efforts and the importance of preserving these incredible ecosystems for future generations. In Tanzania, Salim's guidance was equally exceptional. His knowledge of the Serengeti and other parks was unparalleled, and his passion for sharing the beauty of his homeland with visitors was truly inspiring. From the vast plains of the Serengeti to the stunning landscapes of Ngorongoro Crater, Salim led us on a journey filled with awe and wonder, ensuring that we didn't miss a single moment of the magic that Tanzania has to offer. Thanks to Tourradar team for supporting in answering our several questions on time! Throughout the entire safari, Zack and Salim prioritized our comfort and safety above all else. They went out of their way to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making us feel like part of the family from the moment we arrived. Their attention to detail was impeccable, from setting up comfortable campsites to preparing delicious meals under the stars. We felt truly pampered and cared for every step of the way. But perhaps most importantly, Zack and Salim's genuine kindness and respect for all members of our group made this safari an unforgettable experience. As young ladies traveling in a foreign land, we never once felt out of place or unsafe. Zack and Salim treated us with the utmost respect and professionalism, and their friendly demeanor put us at ease throughout the entire journey. In conclusion, our camping safari through Kenya and Tanzania with Zack and Salim was nothing short of extraordinary. From the incredible wildlife sightings to the warm hospitality and expert guidance, every moment exceeded our wildest expectations. If you're looking for a safe, friendly, and unforgettable safari experience in East Africa, look no further than Zack and Salim. - Constance· April 15th, 2022I would warn against booking with this company. I felt unsafe on this trip, particularly once the safari moved from the portion in Kenya to the portion in Tanzania- to the extent that I ended my trip four days early I was frequently handed off between different guides and drivers without a secure way of confirming who was affiliated with the company and who wasn't, and was sometimes left without a guide or driver at all. At the Namanga border crossing I was left by my driver/guide and a local was paid to see me through the process and onto the shuttle to Arusha, Tanzania. I didn't have service in the area, and if anything had gone wrong had no way to contact anyone. I did not know who I would be meeting in Tanzania or have a way to reach them or know when they would be picking me up. Once I was in Tanzania, my itinerary was changed so that I could be shuffled to join other drivers and tour groups. While I was still slated to visit the same places in the end, changing the order meant that my family and friends at home would not know where I was on a given day, which made me uncomfortable as a young, solo female traveler. Because I was being passed between groups, I also didn't know who my driver would be, where I would be going on a given day, or who might contact me with this information and when. When I contacted the company with concerns they didn't see these issues as valid. Part of the reason I booked this specific tour was because it is advertised as vegan-friendly. Despite letting the company know in advance that I was vegan I was frequently unable to eat anything besides fruit and juice, and had to re-explain what my diet was over and over again. Two days into the trip I contacted the company about this and never received a response. I think it's dishonest to advertise this tour as vegan-friendly. The guides and drivers were all friendly and honestly trying to help solve my problems, admitting that the way things were being handled was far from ideal, and I saw many beautiful animals, but I don't feel like this was enough to overcome the company's mismanagement. Other travelers I was with were in similar situations, with their itineraries being changed last minute and sometimes prices being increased beyond expected while they were already on the tour, or having their lodgings changed to cheaper options after they had already paid.Show moreTrip date: March 2022
- SSteven· September 5th, 2021Note that we did a custom family safari, which followed an itinerary that we set up. We stayed in mid-to-upper range lodges and tented camps. Our safari covered Kenya and Tanzania, including Nairobi, Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Samburu / Buffalo Springs, Amboseli, Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Naivasha, and Hells Gate. Since my wife and I had visited Kenya and Tanzania before, we had a pretty good idea of what we were looking for. The Exciting Africa team was flexible to listen to what we wanted to see, but they also made recommendations of places we hadn't visited during our prior trip that were great additions. This trip was one we had looked forward to, as we wanted to bring our daughters on safari. Exciting Africa lived up to our expectations. Our guide, Zach, was waiting for us as we stepped through customs at the airport and ensured everything ran smoothly all the way through clearing the border into Tanzania. Our daughters had a great time. Zach had many years of experience (as did Bernard, who met us after returning from Tanzania), and it showed. Along with some great sightings, he took us to some off the beaten path locations to break up long drives, not just the usual souvenir stops. With COVID-19, there were a handful of new issues to juggle, especially with regard to testing to cross borders. The Exciting Africa team was aware of the restrictions, knew the most convenient ways to navigate them, and ensured that the right steps were taken with minimal distraction from the trip (and at the right time). Many of our hotels were at around 50% capacity (during the migration) and the wildlife sightings were fantastic. We felt safe throughout our trip. We also had extra time in Kenya scheduled before our flight. We were able to book the last couple of days with a flexible agenda, where we tackled a number of areas of interest based upon the available time. We tend to start early and travel intensely, and they kept pace. If there were one thing I could change about the Kenya portion of the safari, I would adjust the sequence to visit Samburu first and work southward. We had a different operator in Tanzania who had several frustrating minor issues, making us appreciate the smooth experience with Exciting Africa even more. Exciting Africa is a local Kenyan safari company and did a great job on our trip.Show moreTrip date: July 2021
- David· July 14th, 2021The six day safari in Kenya was outstanding. I was concerned at first as our vehicle was not 4WD, but an excellent guide somehow got us everywhere we needed. We saw the Big Five, but more importantly, our guide continually pointed out a wide variety of wildlife, plants, everything of interest The tent camps were super. I had a new travel partner in Tanzania. The guide was very good, but since I became the only guest after two days, the Tanzania local company handed me to another company, who cut my trip by a day. The new guide was not too great, and stole money from a client. Again, this was not the original company. Stella was extraordinarily responsive during my booking process and trip prep, immediately answering questions as Covidv testing requirements changed. She ensured that I received my refund for the shortened trip. We saw many animals. I'd recommend this trip highly. I appreciate that they offered it with all the uncertainties of Covid.Show moreExciting Africa Holidays commented on this reviewThank you David it's our pleasure as a travel company to ensure you receive value for your money.
