- Catherine· May 3rd, 2023I had three days with other guests and then two more where I was all alone. The accommodation was a spacious and friendly guest house. Andrei and Irene are the best hosts and I felt that they had become friends. Andrei took touching care of me, even when I was the only one, and also showed me historical sights on the days when it would have been inconvenient to go on the water. He knows the area like the back of his hand, knows where to find the different bird species, and in the evenings we discussed together what we had seen during the day. For the photographers he had useful tips to get the best shots, because he is also an expert here. Breakfast is simple - Romanesque style - and for lunch and dinner we had fish of all varieties, plus the occasional homemade liquor and delicious brownies. The whole experience was genuine and unadulterated and it was an honor to get such a glimpse into their way of life. The journey (by bus from Bucharest - 4 hours for 120 LEI) went smoothly and Andrei picked me up from the bus station in Tulcea for the half hour journey to Mahmudia. I highly recommend this trip for anyone who wants to see - and photograph - the exuberant birdlife of the Danube Delta.Show more

- David· September 17th, 2021Bunica Maria at Mahmudia is an excellent base to see the Danube Delta Reserve and some of the surrounding area, which is representative of the entire Delta area. Our boat trips showed how this wetland environment is varied and included several lakes. The lodging, as well as the provision of the meals, were a family affair and both were definitely top-notch. I enjoyed so much the variation of fish dishes. Andrei, our guide and host, was excellent and showed a deep love and appreciation of the Delta. Andrei provided an enjoyable and congenial environment for everyone. His boat was very comfortable and provided excellent viewing of the surroundings. He was very knowledgeable about the biodiversity and enthusiastic and helpful in conveying this information to the tour participants. The many species of waterfowl as well as other bird species were the main attraction and I doubt could be seen anywhere else.Show more
