- JKJames· June 19th, 2019This tour appealed for its price and itinerary as well as the option to avoid elephant riding in place of a jeep safari, not knowing how the elephants would be treated. It was good to use a local operator but I was not sure their credentials. In short, I needn't have worried. It was superb. After a hellishly long bus ride that took 7 hours from Kathmandu, I finally arrived in a bus park in the middle of nowhere to be greeted by four men curious to know if I had a reservation with them and was directed to a guy with a white truck with no sign of my name or anything. As I jumped in, all alone, and considering the horrendous bus trip and my nerves about the credentials of the company, it dawned on me that this could be the last time I would be seen alive. Being taken down a pebbled driveway to what appeared to be just the back of someone's house didn't help my nerves either. But then I turned to my left and it all changed. I saw the lodge, was greeted by the warm manager who gave me a much needed welcome drink and who also told me the activity timetable; then the lovely chef even put food in front of me. Bliss! My nerves were completely appeased and I began the process of relaxing...and in hot and humid weather with lovely jungle nature after that awful bus trip one needs to. In 1.5 days I did 5 activities, all meritous of doing: a walk around Sauraha and the male elephants the government help preserve (they are chained but get released to the river daily I was told), a cultural performance, a gondola-esque kayak down a croc infested river to the elephant nursery with females and babies (and they are cute), the aforementioned 5 hour jeep safari (with monkeys, rhinos, birds and the non-wild elephants - a tiger didn't show itself alas) and finishing with a birdwatching tour before breakfast on the last day. I had low expectations and I was blown away with the friendliness of the staff, the great organisation, the very good itinerary and the more than satisfactory accommodation and food (after 22 days of high altitude trekking, this place was luxury!). I strongly recommend this tour done in conjunction with Rainbow Safari operators. I wish I had stayed longer. PS It appeared to be even cheaper if you booked in Nepal with an operator (though I booked online beforehand). Please also note the horrendous bus trip and really hot weather. It is not Chitwan's nor the tour company's fault both these are uncomfortable. You won't see rhinos and elephants walking down the streets in Kathmandu OK! Accept getting there is awful, once you are there, complete relaxation starts (before you board the bus back again)!Show more
